Photon Unity Networking 2 – New Demos, Cleaner API
PUN – A Huge Success Story
Photon Unity Networking has been – and still is – our most successful product powering several top-grossing mobile hits such as Golf Clash, War Robots or Pixel Gun 3D.
But it is not only the leading networking engine on mobile: the world’s top studios and publishers such as Disney, Square Enix, BandaiNamco, Ubisoft (Star Trek: Bridge Crew) or Oculus’ (Dead and Buried) trust in PUN to create games for PC, console or VR/AR/MR.
The Same, but Better
With PUN 2 being the heir of PUN v1 (re-labelled as ‘Photon Classic’ for better differentiation) we needed to make sure to continue its recipe of success hence all features of PUN Classic will live on in PUN 2. However, to facilitate easier and faster implementation of new features in future releases, breaking changes were needed.
In order to cause as little disturbance as possible for our existing customers, we decided to maintain and further support PUN Classic in parallel to PUN 2. This allows exiting PUN Classic customers to decide themselves if they want to make the switch now, later in time or not at all.
Everyone who is starting fresh: go with PUN 2.
Launching in Silence
As we needed some time to update our online docs accordingly, but on the other hand wanted it out in public to get user feedback, we decided to silently launch PUN 2 in the Unity Asset Store a while ago.
We knew about the risk and instantly got some reviews complaining about the documentation right after launch. After we published major updates to the docs reviews got way better and were mostly 4- or 5-stars. However, right now we are still at a 4-stars rating – which hurts – but trend is going up and we are sure it will become a 5-stars package. So please do not miss to give us a review in the Asset Store.
