Unity’s Latest ToS Changes: No Photon SDK is Affected
Yesterday Improbable published a blog post stating that Unity’s updated terms of services (ToS) result in blocking their SpatialOS technology. This led to a lot of turbulence amongst our community and partners who were concerned if Unity’s ToS changes are affecting Photon as well.
As Photon is not including the Unity engine/runtime on the server or in its services, none of our products or services are affected by the new ToS. According to a clarifying blog post from Unity even running headless Unity instances in conjunction with Photon Bolt is completely fine and not violating their ToS.
The only uncertainty left we see is when running such instances with an orchestration service like e.g. GameLift or Zeuz.io. We assume this is also not prohibited, but needs further clarification from Unity. Please check back with Unity in case you are using an orchestration service provider for managing your Unity instances.
