Inside the XR Laser Screed® Simulator: How Photon Powers Real-World Concrete Training
XR Laser Screed® Simulator: VR Training Powered by Photon
In the face of a growing skilled labor shortage, Somero Enterprises, Inc. sought an innovative way to train the next generation of concrete leveling professionals without relying solely on costly, hands-on machine time. Partnering with ForgeFX Simulations, they developed the XR Laser Screed® Operator Training Simulator, a cutting-edge virtual training solution that blends realism, safety, and scalability. Powered by Photon Realtime, this immersive VR application connects instructors and trainees in shared learning environments, delivering true-to-life operational experience from anywhere in the world.
By combining ForgeFX’s deep simulation expertise with Photon’s powerful real-time multiplayer and voice communication technologies, Somero has redefined what’s possible in heavy equipment training. The XR Laser Screed® Operator Training Simulator not only enhances safety and accessibility, it also preserves the craftsmanship and precision at the heart of Somero’s products. As the construction industry embraces digital transformation, this project stands as a benchmark for how XR and networking technology can elevate workforce readiness and operational excellence.
The Client
Founded in 1986, Somero Enterprises, Inc. is a global leader in laser-guided concrete leveling technology. Headquartered in Fort Myers, FL, Somero is known for its cutting-edge innovations and comprehensive training programs, empowering contractors worldwide.
The Challenge
How do you train the next generation of heavy equipment operators in an industry facing a severe skilled labor shortage? With limited trainers and a shrinking labor pool, real-world machine training is increasingly difficult to scale. For Somero Enterprises, Inc., manufacturer of the S-22EZ Advanced Laser Screed®, a large-scale laser-guided machine that spreads, levels, and vibrates concrete in a single pass, skilled operation is essential to both product performance and customer success.
Traditional training requires costly travel, machine access, and controlled pour environments. Physical constraints on the real machine also limit training to one student at a time, with instructors often standing beside loud, moving equipment, restricting communication and posing safety risks. Somero needed a way to deliver expert training without sacrificing realism or the muscle memory essential to mastering perishable materials like concrete.

The Solution
Somero partnered with ForgeFX to develop an immersive VR training application with lessons covering prestart inspection, cockpit familiarization, laser system setup, transportation, and full screeding operations with scoring and guidance. Designed to mirror hands-on field training, the application enables safe, repeatable training on high-value equipment, without wear, risk, or downtime. Built for team-based learning, the system allows instructors and trainees to share the same operator seat, observe procedures together, and communicate clearly in collaborative, instructor-led sessions.

Platform / Devices
Cross-platform architecture supports Meta Quest and Pico standalone XR headsets with controller and hand tracking support. Runtime logic, optimized for each platform, maintains consistent performance across device ecosystems. ArborXR enables centralized device management, including remote provisioning and configuration across fleets. Kiosk mode, usage analytics, and content access controls streamline deployment, simplify administration, and support secure, scalable XR training programs.

Use of Photon
Photon powers Somero’s multi-user functionality, enabling remote instructors and trainees to join shared sessions from anywhere in the world. Users can observe each other’s actions, communicate through integrated voice chat, and collaborate on complex tasks like screed-head setup and cross-slope “nulling.” The application uses Photon Realtime for private instructor-led rooms, customizable avatars (e.g., colors, names), real-time state sync for shared machine interactions, and event driven RPCs to guide lesson progression. Photon Voice is used for live coaching.
